Brewing beer in this corner of North America poses a unique set of challenges, but founder Gabe Fletcher has created a business in just a few years.
ANCHORAGE, ALASKA-Being a lover of craft beer, I do my best to visit and meet with brewers when I travel.
While enjoying a visit and tour of the Anchorage Brewing Company’s brewery and beautiful tasting room, I chatted with founder Gabe Fletcher about his experience as a brewer in the far reaches of North America.
How did you get into brewing and when did the Anchorage Brewing Company open?
I sort of just fell into it. I was offered a job at Midnight Sun when I was 21, and within a year and a half I became head brewer and fell in love with brewing, especially working with barrels. I was head brewer at Midnight Sun Brewing for almost 13 years. I decided to start my own brewery in August 2010. We brewed our first beer in December 2010 and released it in June 2011. Now we are producing about 2,500 barrels a year.
Are there many craft brewers in Anchorage and in Alaska?
There’s a few in Anchorage, about nine and more opening. In Alaska, there are about 30 and several in planning and construction as we speak.
