
This Florida destination will engage both kids and parents alike with Segway rides, manatees, specialty doughnuts, and eateries by the sea.
ANNA MARIA ISLAND, FLA.—After some fun at Legoland in Winter Haven, Fla., it’s great to return to family-friendly Anna Maria Island and its gorgeous beaches and amazing sunsets. There’s fun to be had here, too:
Segways: Ride a Segway along the coast. Segs by the Sea (segsbythesea.com) gives you a short lesson on how to manoeuvre the Segway before you head out. Our guide took us from Bradenton Beach to Cortez and from Coquina Beach to Longboat Key. Our 90-minute tour was a great way to test the Segway and have family fun.
Manatees: In Bradenton, stop at the Parker Manatee Aquarium in the South Florida Museum (southfloridamuseum.org) to meet Snooty, the oldest living manatee in captivity. He’s 67 years old and has been in the care of the South Florida Museum since he was 11 months old. There are a few other manatees going through rehabilitation.
