Feeling safer as a solo female traveller by staying connected

May 24, 2016 by Anne-Marie Marais Leave a Comment

When I first started traveling a cellphone wasn’t the most important item you packed, like it is today. And even with my first few cell phones, it was far too expensive to use them while travelling.

All connection to home was by way of sending a post card, or finding a public phone with a pocket full of change for a quick, expensive, 30-second conversation to tell your parents you were fine.

Embracing travel as a solo female

May 2, 2016 by Anne-Marie Marais Leave a Comment

Single women are heading out on their own in larger numbers to hit that road more or less traveled. A 2013 poll of travel agents by Travel Guard Worldwide, Inc., found that, ‘Agents reported that it’s much more common for woman to travel alone than men, with 73% of agents polled noting that more female travelers embark on solo trips than their male counterparts.’

Even with an ever changing world, women are realizing that they can safely see the world solo. And that world can be a short drive, train ride or flight away for short getaways to re-energize or the longer, further distance, life journey that many women are embarking on.

Arrivals and Departures Stories on Hello Goodbye from CBC

January 4, 2016 by Anne-Marie Marais Leave a Comment

I’ve always felt that Arrivals at the airport is one of the happiest places on Earth and Departures, even though hopeful for new adventures, can be one of the saddest as we bid farewell to friends and family.

Even in movies like Love Actually (click link to see video) we’ve heard Hugh Grant talk about the arrivals and departures at LHR (London Heathrow) and all the love that you see as friends and family arrive.

App helps to explore a world without barriers

May 22, 2015 by Anne-Marie Marais Leave a Comment

Planat app helps everyone with mobility restrictions.

My eyes have been opened to an entire other side of travel after attending the World Summit on Accessible Travel in Montreal in 2014.

Now I look at the places I visit through different eyes.

The need for accessible destinations abroad and in your own city is so important and the need grows each day as the population ages. Accessibility encompasses more than just those who you may think.

Amsterdam, Marcel Wanders: A Dutchman’s design takes flight

December 5, 2014 by Anne-Marie Marais Leave a Comment

Marcel Wanders designed stirring spoon for KLM

World famous Dutch designer Marcel Wanders has designed for Puma, MAC Cosmetics, Cappellini, Moroso and Target. But it wasn’t for his work with Puma, MAC or Target that had me stopping in at his studio in Amsterdam.

I first encountered his designs flying in KLM’s World Business Class. Wanders designed all the tableware. One piece, in particular, caught my attention.

October 24, 2014 by Anne-Marie Marais Leave a Comment

Destinations for All World Summit

MONTREAL—Information is key when it comes to accessible travel for people living with physical challenges, and it is rarely available on travel booking web sites. That was the message at the Destinations for All World Summit in Montreal, convened to look into the issue.
