Beer lovers can broaden their palate in Belgium

April 28, 2016 by Anne-Marie Marais Leave a Comment

Belgium reveals beers of all types, tastes and levels of alcohol.

BRUSSELS-Wine lovers tour Italy. Whisky connoisseurs tour Scotland. Beer lovers visit Belgium.

On my five-day beer pilgrimage to Belgium, I tasted or drank more than 107 beers, visited six towns/cities and at least 11 breweries, and lost count of the number of brewers I met.

With the relatively recent popular craft beer explosion in North America, it was a treat to visit a country where the beer roots run so deep and be part of the 2015 European Beer Bloggers & Writers Conference.

legoland florida

Lego lovers of all ages will get a kick out of Legoland Florida Resort’s themed zones and the Legoland Hotel.

WINTER HAVEN, FLA.—We’ve all played with and created amazing things with Lego, and Legoland in Florida lets both kids and adults enjoy the experience on a larger scale.

I convinced my nieces, ages 9 and 13, along with their parents, to join me on a Florida gulf coast holiday, with a two-day side trip to Legoland Florida Resort in Winter Haven.

Dancing with Bonhomme at Carnaval de Québec snow bath

January 18, 2016 by Anne-Marie Marais Leave a Comment

QUEBEC CITY — I first learned of Carnaval de Québec in Grade 4 French class and fell instantly in love with Bonhomme, the symbol of what bills itself as the world’s largest winter carnival.

I knew I one day wanted to meet the 7-foot tall replica of a snowman who has been the carnival’s ambassador since its start in 1955 and who visits all its activities.

But I had no idea that during my first Carnaval last year I would be wearing a swimsuit in freezing temperatures, about —-20C to be precise, and dancing with Bonhomme on a snow-covered hill in front of an audience.

Minneapolis, Minnesota: Hailing Mary Tyler Moore

January 2, 2015 by Anne-Marie Marais Leave a Comment

MINNEAPOLIS—Do you remember which classic TV show helped to put Minneapolis on the entertainment map? It all started with that famous beret toss at the end of the opening of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. As a fan of the ’70s TV series, I had to make a stop at Mary’s corner, where you can find a statue of her.

This city is filled with history, culture and sport. Now Minneapolis may not be a place that you plan to stop for a long time, but it will keep you busy when you stop in for a weekend or more. And it’s easy to get around, thanks to the Metro.

Aquarium Fun in Toronto.

Rainbow Reef

It’s been open for a while, but I finally made it to our newest attraction in Toronto – Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada.  And it was definitely worth the wait.  What a great addition to our city and all the other attractions near it, like the CN Tower, the Rogers Centre, the Air Canada Centre and the Roundhouse.
