Prince Edward Island all to myself

September 29, 2013 by Anne-Marie Marais Leave a Comment

Cavendish Beach

Over the past few years, I’ve been drawn to the east coast of Canada.  Not sure why, I just have been.  So after years of seeing coast lines of different countries, I thought that it was time to check out the east coast of this fine country.  This fit quite well into my plan to see more of Canada and enjoy the beauty that my backyard has to offer.

Luckily I was able to grab a deal as part of an Air Canada seat sale back in June, so I booked myself a trip to Prince Edward Island for late September.  Didn’t really know at the time just how much would already be closed up at that point in September, but it was the right decision and time for me to visit.  Living and working in the biggest city in Canada, Toronto, the hustle and bustle can really get to you.  So to arrive and tour around PEI at this time of the year, it was like I had the island to myself.  It was awesome!

With a fun little rental car, GPS, a few maps and a general plan, plus accommodations booked in different towns each night, I set out on my journey around this great little island.  Saying that, little island, that was definitely something that was tough to wrap my head around when I was in the planning stages.  But that’s just what it is, a little, but grand, island.  Which means you can see so much in just one day, or take your time and still see so much in just a few days.

My trip took me to Cavendish for my Anne of Green Gables fix (had to do it), then along the north coast, or the Green Gables Shore, to the Points East Coastal Drive, followed by a Saturday night in Charlottetown and couldn’t miss the Red Sands Shore, before heading back to Charlottetown before the flight home.

I think that the best way to enjoy a journey like this is through the photos.  But, before I share those, let me give you some highlights and some must sees and do’s.

  • Take the time to walk the Cavendish Beach and see the sand dunes
  • As an Anne of Green Gables fan, seeing the Green Gables house, and the area surrounding it, was a dream come true
  • Take your time enjoying the coastal drive
  • Pick up some fish and chips to go at Rick’s Fish and Chips in St. Peter’s and head to Greenwich to enjoy them by the sea
  • Stop in at Prince Edward Distillery and enjoy a tour and a taste of their potato vodka
  • At some point in your trip find a Famous Peppers Pizza, get a pizza and enjoy!
  • Definitely take a trip with PEI Perry of Tranquility Cove Adventures out of Georgetown
  • When in Charlottetown and looking for a B&B to stay at, choose the Colonial Charm Inn. Fantastic owners, staff, atmosphere and location.  Plus a yummy breakfast and baked goodies throughout the day.
  • If it’s playing again, please see Anne & Gilbert: The Musical, as I loved it.  And I’m not a fan of theatre unless it’s fun!
  • Go for a tour of Cow’s Creamery if they are making ice cream (not that often), if not still make sure to enjoy it a few scoops throughout your trip and check out the awesome t-shirts.
  • Ensure that you go and visit the wonderful team at PEI Brewing Company for a tour and tasting in Charlottetown.  Plus hit Gahan House while you’re in town and try the sampler tray.
  • Make sure to see the Confederation Bridge from your flight in or from one side of the other.
  • And check out the sleepy town of Victoria by the sea.  But not on a Monday in the off-season!

I can’t wait to go back and visit this island and its people.  It, and the people, have a special place in my heart now!
