Burlington, Vermont: Cracking a brew in frozen Vermont

February 19, 2015 by Anne-Marie Marais Leave a Comment

Switchback Brewery

BURLINGTON, VERMONT—They’ve got a lot brewing in Burlington. Beer tourism is growing in popularity across Canada and the U.S. And I found the city that has it figured out: Burlington, Vermont.

The best place to start your beer pilgrimage is the Hotel Vermont and a conversation with their beer concierge, Matt Canning. That’s right, a beer concierge. With all Burlington has to offer, this is a necessary position in a hotel that’s right in the middle of the brewing community.

Anna Maria Island, Florida: On Pine Ave., a donut place for the ages

Salting the donuts

ANNA MARIA ISLAND, FLORIDA—If you’re looking for fun in the sun, great food, beautiful beaches and peace and quiet, Anna Maria Island, should be a destination on your list. And I do mean “quiet;” there is a noise by-law in place past 10 p.m. to keep everything peaceful for residents.

Not wanting to spend my hard earned money on a rental car, Anna Maria Island made it easy for me to leave the driving to someone else. That someone is the driver of the free trolley that takes you around. The trolley runs the length of the 11-km. island. And the island is very walkable.

Florida, Bradenton: Sports are followed by more sports

Rowing at Nathan Benderson Park

BRADENTON, FLORIDA—A trip here means one thing: sports. This part of Florida is a great place for all sorts of sporting activities, whether you like to participate or watch:

Rowing: When I heard that a new facility had been built in Bradenton for the 2017 World Rowing Championships, it went to the top of my list for my visit, as I am a rower.

At one time, the Nathan Benderson Park, was just a catch-basin pit for road construction. But it’s been transformed into a world-class rowing, dragon boat, kayak and canoe-racing facility.

Minneapolis, Minnesota: Hailing Mary Tyler Moore

The Spoonbridge and Cherry scuplture seen through the trees in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden.

MINNEAPOLIS—Do you remember which classic TV show helped to put Minneapolis on the entertainment map? It all started with that famous beret toss at the end of the opening of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. As a fan of the ’70s TV series, I had to make a stop at Mary’s corner, where you can find a statue of her.

This city is filled with history, culture and sport. Now Minneapolis may not be a place that you plan to stop for a long time, but it will keep you busy when you stop in for a weekend or more. And it’s easy to get around, thanks to the Metro.

Columbus, Ohio: Breakfast with Nick in Columbus is a moveable feast

COLUMBUS, OHIO—Did someone say breakfast? Columbus is one of America’s up-an-coming culinary destinations and what meal better to start with then breakfast.

If you think that you love breakfast, then you haven’t met Professor Nick Dekker of Columbus, Ohio, the blogger behind BreakfastwithNick.com and the book Breakfast with Nick: Columbus. He calls himself “one of those insufferable morning people.” I would say that I fall into the same category.

Alexandria, Virginia: Walking in the footsteps of history

Market Square, Old Town, Alexandria, VA

ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA—Virginia is for lovers and I’m smitten with Alexandria.

If I could have one special power, it would be the ability to go back in time and experience a place in its heyday.

You’ve heard of Washington, D.C., and you most likely know of Arlington, Virginia, but do you know of the historic old town of Alexandria?
